Root Ball Epoxy Bowl
I was driving to the New Mexico Woodturners Board meeting, and I passed a man digging out this root ball. I stopped and asked if I could have it, and he said yes. I had time before the meeting, so I helped him finish digging it out. I loaded it in the car and proceeded to the meeting. After cleaning the dirt out from around all the roots, trim them back to make them fit the mold. Once in the mold, I mixed about 1-1/2 Gallons of Alumilite Deep Pour epoxy. I didn't use color because I wanted to see what was exposed after turning the piece. The wood in this root ball is tough. I have tools that use metal cutters, and I used four cutters to do just the inside of this piece.
Preparation time is about two hours and then in the pressure pot for 24 hours. Full curing takes another seven days.
It took me about four hours to turn this piece and another two hours to apply the finish.
